A life cut way to short.

This time of year is for celebrating, with most schools holding graduation ceremonies, it's not supposed to be a tragic as this.

According to the Times Union, the Coxsackie Athens Central School district in Greene County is mourning the death of a 17 year old senior after she sustained fatal injuries in a car accident that took place just hours before her high school graduation.

Alyssa Christiana of Athens was a backseat passenger in a car with three other friends coming home from a reported party in the Town of Cairo around 6 a.m. Friday when the car they were driving in, a 2002 Ford Focus, left the road and crashed on Route 9G in the Town of Greenport.

Police told the Times Union that the 16 year old driver of the car did not seem to be impaired by alcohol at the time of the crash and that Christiana, who suffered serious internal injuries, was airlifted to Albany Medical Center Hospital were she passed away.

Another 16 year old female and a 17 year old male were hurt in the accident, but their injuries were not considered life threatening.

School district Superintendent Randall Squier told the Times Union that, "With heavy hearts we celebrated our commencement on Friday evening, we're taking it one day at a time here."

Police have said that their investigation into the accident is continuing.
