A Fishkill man who was charged with a DWI was found to be in possession of heroin and a hypodermic needle after police responded to a car collision, authorities said.

New York State Police were dispatched by Dutchess County 911 to investigate a one-car accident on Route 9 in Wappinger. Following an investigation conducted by the responding officers, it was discovered that 22-year-old Matthew R. Herring, of Fishkill, was traveling northbound on State Route 9 when he exited the roadway and stuck a curb. Herring, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

During their investigation police allege that Herring was driving while impaired by drugs. Police also say he was found to be in possession of heroin and a hypodermic needle.

Herring was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, 7th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a hypodermic instrument, all misdemeanors. The defendant was issued traffic tickets directing him to appear before the Town of Wappinger Court on February 23, 2016.
