A firefighter is accused of killing a military veteran in the Hudson Valley.

Eric Werner, 44, of Buchanan is accused of fatally hitting 63-year-old Joseph Orichello of Buchanan on Albany Post Road in Northern Westchester County early Saturday morning and fleeing the scene.

Orichello, a military veteran, was found dead by police around 1 a.m. Saturday, ABC reports.

Werner, a 17-year-veteran with the FDNY was, is accused of fleeing the scene in his Jeep Cherokee after fatally hitting Orichello.

A unique trim from Werner's vehicle was found at the scene which helped police identify Werner as the suspect, according to CBS. The damaged Jeep was found inside a trailer in Peekskill. The FDNY veteran was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, a felony.

"We do have reason to believe that there was the possibility of trying to hide the car or tamper with things. That’s still under investigation,” John Hodges of the Westchester County police told CBS.

Werner was suspended by the FDNY without pay.
