Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. There will be many ceremonies throughout the Hudson Valley to pay tribute to our fallen men and women. It is also the unofficial beginning of summer and with that comes parties and barbecue along with an adult beverage or two.

Memorial Day is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year and police will be out in force to remove impaired and reckless drivers from our roadways this weekend. According to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, drunk driving killed 317 people and injured more than 5,600 others in New York State in 2014. Another 188 people were killed in drug-related crashes.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today that State Police and local law enforcement agencies will be increasing patrols statewide to combat drunk and impaired driving this weekend. These measures will begin on Friday, May 27 and will continue through Monday, May 30.

You can expect to see sobriety checkpoints as well as increased patrols by State Police and local law enforcement agencies during this holiday weekend.

Enjoy your holiday weekend, but please be smart and don't drink and drive.
