A Dutchess County man is accused of stealing checks from a family member and having friends cash them in.

On Wednesday, New York State Police from Wappinger arrested 29-year-old Robert A. Huzar of Hopewell for criminal possession of a forged instrument, a class D felony.

In December 2016, troopers were contacted by two Dutchess County men who reported they were victims of a crime that occurred between October and November of 2016.

The victims said that Huzar, an acquaintance, asked them to cash checks for him because he didn't have a bank account. Several days later, the victims reported that the checks were returned because the bank account that the checks were attached to was closed.

An investigation revealed that Huzar stole the checks from a family member and forged them, police say. As a result, the two victims both lost over $275.

Huzar was arraigned in the Town of Fishkill Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond. He’s due in the Village of Wappinger Falls Court on Monday.

The investigation is on-going and additional criminal charges are pending against Huzar, officials say.

State Police were assisted by the Town of Fishkill Police Department.
