Tragedy struck this Memorial Day weekend. A young life taken way to soon.

According to the Times Herald Record, 22-year-old Newburgh resident, Jack Jakubek drowned during lifeguard tryouts at Pilgrim Lake beach in Cape Cod on Saturday morning.

Fire department officials told the Record that, Jakubek slipped beneath the surface around 8:49 a.m. and was found unconscious about a half hour later. He was located by a fire department diver about 150 to 200 yards from shore in about 10 to 15 feet of water.

Jakubek graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School in 2012 and went on to graduate from SUNY Cortland in 2016 and was the captain of the schools men's swim team called the Red Dragons.

His swim coach and Cortland mayor Brian Tobin told the Record that Jakubek was a "very mature young man," who had figured out what his passions were in life. Those passions included swimming, the environment and working with children.

The Cape's District Attorneys office has started an investigation into the drowning.
