A local family from Patterson, New York, has made a generous donation to the Putnam County Sheriffs Department. Actually, make that a double dontaion.

In a press release the Putnam County Sheriffs Department announced the addition of two new K9's to their K9 unit. Not only are they new additions, but they were kindly donated by two Patters residents.

Joseph and Monika Stilwell donated two male, pure bred, German Shepard's. The K9's were flown in from Holland and go by Kato and Lex. Along with the dogs, the Stilwell family brought over an obedience trainer and the other monies will be used for Kato, Lex and their handlers to train in narcotics detection, tracking and patrol.

Kato will be teamed up with Deputy Sheriff Vincent Dalo, while Lex is partnered with Deputy Sheriff Christopher Irwin.

Not only do the donations cover training for the K9's, but also covers two new, fully equipped 2017 Ford Explorers patrol vehicles. The vehicles come with kennel cages and heat alarm windows that will roll the windows down if the car gets too hot with the K9's inside.

In addition to the dogs, training and patrol vehicles, the Stilwell's money donation covered the cost of two new bullet proof vests for Kato and Lex.

Sheriff Smith is quoted saying“On behalf of the taxpayers of Putnam County and the citizens who will be served and protected by the K-9 Unit, I express my sincerest gratitude to the Stilwell family for their most generous gift, it is a donation that will really help make the whole community safer.”

Combining all of the donations together comes out to around $120,000.00.

Welcome to the family Kato and Lex!
