Deadly Polar Vortex is Making its Way to New York

A deadly polar vortex that's impacting the Midwest is heading towards New York bringing with it dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills.

The coldest weather in years has killed at least six people in the Midwest this week. Now, meteorologists say the polar vortex is coming to the Northeast.

"A large mass of Arctic air is moving into the region and bringing well-below-normal temperatures that will stick around into Friday," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Edwards said.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Warning or a Wind Chill Advisory for all of the Hudson Valley.

Dangerously cold wind chills are expected Wednesday and Thursday with wind chills of 15 below to 30 below zero likely, according to the National Weather Service.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken.

A Wind Chill Warning means the combination of very cold air and the wind will create dangerously low wind chill values. Frostbite can occur quickly and even hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken.

Hudson Valley Weather is currently predicting a low Wednesday night of -8 degrees with wind chills of -10 to -35 degrees Thursday's high will be near 11 degrees and a low of around -3 degrees. The wind could make it feel -10 to -30 degrees.
