At a ceremony held at Poughkeepsie City Hall on Friday afternoon, four men and one woman were sworn in as new police officers for the City of Poughkeepsie.

The five new recruits, Tyler Hoag, Jerel Yizar, Tanner Schrader, Katelyn Casey, and Adam Aquafredda bring the police force up to 90 members according to Chief Thomas Pape. Mayor Rob Rolison pointed out that, including these five, the city has added 11 new officers since 2016.

The "guardians of the community" as Rolison called them will be attending the police academy run by Sgt. Shawn Castano of the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office.

The class will run approximately 20 weeks and will test the recruits mentally and physically so that, upon graduation, they are well prepared for their on-the-job training which will last another four to six months before they are ready for assignment.
