By now you have heard that Kraft Foods has recalled boxes of Kraft Mac and Cheese. If you haven't hear be sure to check out CJ's blog from earlier today that gives you all the fact you need to know regarding what boxes have been recalled. This is truly a disaster for everyone who loves Kraft Mac and Cheese. What if there is a shortage at your local grocery. No worries I am here to offer a solution, Canadian Kraft Dinner.

Let's back up for a moment. According to Wikipedia prepared mac and cheese came to the forefront during the great depression. People needed an easy to prepare staple and the idea was born. A salesman in St Louis Missouri actually came up with the idea first to put a package of grated cheese with a box of pasta, he rubber banded them together an sold them as a comfort food meal.  In 1937 Kraft Food introduced Kraft Mac and Cheese and well you know the rest.

So where does this Canadian version fit in to the mix? It was during World War II and Kraft food was introducing Kraft Mac and Cheese to the world as a food with a shelf life of 10 months. The milk and dairy rationing along with families turning to meatless meals was the perfect time for Kraft Mac and Cheese to offer an alternative. Kraft Mac and Cheese was considered a great family meal.

Kraft Dinner or K.D. as the Canadians refer to it is similar but slightly different. It is made in Canada by Kraft Foods so it has to follow Canadian food laws. It has a slightly healthier recipe, my editorial opinion. It is considered the "national dish" and is treasured like Tim Horton's Donuts and the A & W Teen Burger. No worries if you haven't heard of those, it just means your probably not Canadian. Canadians consume 1.7 million boxes of the 7 million boxes sold globally each week. They eat 55 percent more than Americans.

So while this recall in underway if you find yourself needing your Kraft Mac and Cheese fix, head for the boarder or the internet and order some Canadian Kraft Dinner to hold you over. Who knows you might end up a convert from the American version to the Canadian version.
