Girl Scout Cookie season begins on Friday, but there are four cookies that you won't be able to get your hands on.

As someone who's never been involved in Girl Scouts, the whole cookie selling season has always been filled with mystery and intrigue. I never seem to know when it begins or ends, and why we only get some cookies in the Hudson Valley and not others.

It turns out that there are actually two companies that bake cookies for Girl Scout troops throughout the country. Little Brownie Bakers and ABC Bakers are both contracted by the organization to create all of the cookies sold by the scouts. The cookies sold in the Hudson Valley are baked by Little Brownie Bakers, which means that some cookie variations won't be available here this year.

Girl Scout S'mores (ABC version)

Although local Girl Scouts will be selling a different version of the S'mores cookie, the one that's "double dipped in yummy crème icing and finished with a scrumptious chocolatey coating" will not be for sale in the Hudson Valley. The S'mores sold locally is a more traditional version of the treat, with layers of chocolate and marshmallow filling sandwiched between two graham cracker cookies.

Lemonades

While we do get Savannah Smiles, the other, icing-covered lemon-flavored Girl Scout cookie will not be making its way to the Hudson Valley. The crescent-shaped Savannah Smiles have a tart powdered sugar coating while Lemonades are round and coated with a tart lemon glaze.

Thanks-A-Lot

These simple shortbread cookies are coated with chocolate on the bottom and are embossed with the words "Thank You" written in various languages. We will still get Trefoils, which are basically the shortbread cookie without the chocolate or the "thank you" message.

Caramel Chocolate Chip

This cookie is described as being a combination of "rich caramel, semisweet chocolate chips and a hint of sea salt." All of that flavor is packed into a chewy cookie that is also gluten-free. If you' have a gluten allergy, however, all is not lost. The Hudson Valley will have a limited supply of Toffee-Tastic Gluten-Free cookies. These are butter cookies with toffee chunks mixed in. If you want them you should contact your local Girl Scout soon, as they are only sold in limited quantities.

Now, before you get too sad about missing out on these four cookies, it's important to note that all of the best flavors will still be available in the Hudson Valley starting on Friday. They include Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Do-si-dos, Savannah Smiles, S'mores Cookies and Toffee Tastic Gluten-Free cookies. The Heart of the Hudson Valley Girl Scout program's website has a full description of the cookies available in the Hudson Valley this year and information on how to get your hands on some before they disappear until next year.
